The new job

Employer: Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA)
Position: Cost Engineer
Location: Washington Navy Yard, Washington DC
Description: Produce cost estimates on Navy ships for budgeting and contract purposes.

My new job is going well. I am learning a lot every day - different Navy terms, interplay of different departments, techniques to estimate the cost of ships, and even on new tricks in Excel. All of the people I work with are great. There is always some event in the office that calls for cake, so I am eating too much of it- though it always tends to have chocolate icing, which I am not a fan of.

The intern program I am part of will last 2.5 years, at which point I graduate the program and continue working at NAVSEA. I have planned one external rotation so far and it is an office in the Pentagon, but it is the rotation everyone says the enjoy the least. I will do that in about a year. I have also planned a rotation into the group that determines labor rates and overhead rates at ship yards. I still have yet to plan my external rotation at a ship yard. Most people plan theirs for San Diego, California.

My group (Amphibious and Auxiliary ships) has very little leadership at the moment, and the experienced intern in my group is about to go on rotation. This means I will be thrown into a project that I will be taking a major roll in, since there are just not enough people for all of the work. This is good though because I think I will experience quicker learning and get more responsibility than many interns do at the beginning.

I am awaiting my first pay raise, which should be in December or January. It will not be much, but will be exciting none the less, especially since everything here is so expensive!!!!

I like working at the Washington Navy Yard because it has a lot of history and old interesting architecture (they used to build ships here, and after than they converted it into a cannon production facility, but it is now only offices). Also its great because every other Thursday in the summer there is free ice cream (located conveniently outside the gym)! And the best part about my job is that we are allowed to take 1 hour 3 times a week from our work day to go to the gym (and get paid during that hour)! Hopefully this will offset the ice cream and the cake.
